Luckily it only negatively impacted one class, and that's my easiest one to recover from. Got some good reviews on my Hooman drawing skills today. Seems I'm finally paying enough attention to the muscles in the legs and abdomen, now I gotta work on the arms some more. |

| | artistic | ] | For those of you who know Sift, you'll know what he's been going through. A mutual friend of ours is hosting a Charity Auction for his benefit, and I've decided to contribute two commissions to help him out in his endeavour for independence from his family. If you'd like to place a bid to help Sift out and give me some practice doodling and coloring stuff up for you, please head on over to:
http://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/item.pl?item=232353982
General-themed commission. Can be anything within reason :)
http://www.furbid.ws/cgi-bin/auction/item.pl?item=232353983
Mature-themed commission. Would prefer to draw macro funs, but again within reason.
I've never really been successful with commissions before because I hate to charge money and pocket it for what I consider to be scribbles and practice work. When it's for a friend, though, I think I can handle it. Good luck! |

| | accomplished | ] | Nothing truly revolutionary. I just wanted to show off my new self portrait and say I spent over five hours today sculpting Melvin von Haarschnitt III for my Animation class. I'll try to get some good photos, but he's the 'Mad Scientist' cartoon character I'm going to be animating this year for my Projects class.
It's odd, sculpting. After working so long with two-dimensional media, actually crafting a three dimensional re-representation of a character I've doodled in over twenty pages is a refreshing and interesting experience.
If you have any inclination to draw, I recommend it. All in all the project cost me about $40, but it could be done for less on a smaller scale.
I should have taken pictures of each phase of the sculpture, but I'll try to transcribe it as best as I can for 4 am insomnia.
Materials: I got a wood block base for free as scrap wood at Home Depot, bought a 1/2 inch cast metal flange (1/4 inch works better), and enough metal pipe to form a support stand. Imagine a piece of pipe screwed into the wood, going up about five inches, making a 90 degree angle, sticking out a few more inches, and ending in a T-section of pipe. I purchased two blocks of Plastolina modeling clay, though Super Sculpy is a good alternative. 20ft of aluminum armature wire proved to be more than adequate for a single project, and I have most left over for any future possibilities. I twisted and shaped the armature wire into the rough gesture of Melvin that I'd chosen for the project, and balled a ton of aluminum foil onto the 'skeleton' to give it the proper base form. Only then did I start adding the heavier clay. Once the body and head were shaped, I worked on the arms, getting the overall structure like the picture I posted here recently. The rest was just layering on the details. He now has a full labcoat, facial features, and a giant pair of scissors added with additional armature. The hands and face took the longest time to prod details out of with my plastic sculpting tools, but I'm happy with the end result. I'll be sure to post pics tomorrow! |

| 3 am and all's well. Sort of. |

| [ | Current Mood |
| | pensive | ] | Eh, I don't post journals very often. I have little to say usually. I have little to say now, but I might as well say it just to get it out of my system.
So I'm going to start my official Sophomore Year at Digipen. This wouldn't be a major event, except this is the fourth time I've made it this far in college, and so far without any further success. I've blown a lot of money at NCSU, Weber State, and even at Digipen with mislaid paths and ventures. I wish I had known exactly what I wanted to do in life, and what I was getting myself into. Now I'm out of reserve money from my college funds, and now have had to take out a student loan to make ends meet. I'll likely be borrowing ten thousand dollars a year on top of my $12k credit card debt (mostly college debt, but some frivolity of course), and then hopefully I'll get my degree and start paying it all down while living here in the Seattle area. My father has agreed to help me with some of the loans by providing some of his savings capital, which he has graciously offered to provide as an interest free loan. I'm just thankful that I can still attend my chosen college and on the chosen path that I've cemented my shoes in now. I just hope and pray I'm not taking a long walk off of what could be a short pier.
So anyways, here's to another year of Digipen. Another year of digging myself in deeper so I can learn how to claw my way out into the world at large. Even though the video game industry used to be filled with rockstars and big names, I'll probaby never see my name in lights. At least that's not something I need to worry about. If you're reading this, that means you probably mean something to me in one way or another, and that's all I really need.
Anyways, I've got to get to bed earlier. I'm still humming with wakefulness past 3am... not good for a college guy. Might have to buy another box of sleep-aid... |

| | confused | ] | Eh. I'm sure everyone's heard this sort of talk. I love World of Warcraft. I'm apparently one of the best geared priests on our server, and it seems that whenever I log on, I have something to do for hours of entertainment.
But those hours of fun are being unbalanced by having a blank piece of paper or two lying next to me on the pile of junk on my desk.
I really need to draw more, but I refuse to give up my friends and achievements online. I must find a better balance.
Luckily school is a strong force. Since I'll start up my Sophomore Year officially on Sept. 8th, I'll be out of the Summer Vacation mindset and back into the Draw Stuff mindset. I really want to get better at making 3D models and animating them. |

| FOR THE BORED! |
[Aug. 20th, 2009|02:09 am] |
First off, let me say that I love the Horde just as much as I like the Alliance. They've got a furry race, a kick ass leader, and have been through hell and high water to become the noble and awesome force they are today.
I just wanted to apologize for slaying Cairne Bloodhoof, Sylvanas Windrunner, Thrall, and Lor'themar Theron over the last three days, Sylvanas unfortunately taking her three hour nap twice.
It seems that I'm something of a natural 'leader' when it comes to the rolling ball of lol jokes and /train commands called a City Raid. It completely surprised me how well I managed to defuse mistrust amongst the ranks and instill a sense of courage and force behind what amounted to a giant Katamari Ball of teenagers and facerollers.
Admittedly, there were some experienced help, I do want to thank Avine, Codd, and Makita for offering help, and to Mourney for coming up with an ingeneous plan to surgically strike Bloodhoof off the map without a single Horde Player able to respond in time.
That being said, I was utterly thrilled by the experience of leading a group of incohesive people who hadn't even met each other before Tuesday into a successful raid on all of the Horde's capitols!
And I invite any horde players out there to come and kill our idiot warmonger of a king, Anduin Wrynn. I never liked the guy anyways. |

Where did all my passion go? World of Warcraft? Probably. I really don't want to give up my quasi-social life there and all the fun stuff, but I'll probably have to force myself to cut waaaay back to get my pencil back onto the paper more often. I also should try getting my sleep schedule back to something normal. I'm starting to hate falling asleep at four or six am. |

| Dancing Mad |
[Jul. 11th, 2009|11:12 pm] |
There are a few crystalline moments in everyone's life. Moments where you are unable to express yourself in words or even thoughts. The sheer intensity of the day leaves you happy and euphoric for hours or even days.
I just had one of those weekends.
I was having lunch at Panda Express about a week ago when I first heard the news. I happened to be leafing through the newspaper looking for the comics when a picture jumped out at me. Squall Leonhart was there, along with a 'Final Fantasy' logo. Piqued, I read on. The Seattle Symphony would be hosting a concert this weekend featuring over a dozen famous Final Fantasy pieces composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu. Only $25 for average seating. I knew I had to go. But then a little sunburst caught my eye. 'Meet and greet with the composer! $100'
Yes, Uematsu-sama was going to be there in person.
Now, to some, this name doesn't mean all that much. If you were to compare him to, say, Michael Jordan in terms of skill and expertise at something he knows how to do, you'd get my reaction. Here was the opportunity of a lifetime: Meet the man who stirred my heart with a 16-bit processor's sound. FFVI was the game that got me interested in Video Game design and animation. There isn't a single person who's played through it who doesn't remember the Opera scene, Atma Weapon, or Dancing Mad. Not only were they going to play it live in concert, I could finally meet the man himself. Except, it was $125. And I'm borderline broke and in debt up to my ears. :(
So, with a heavy heart, I had to put those dreams back on the shelf and return to mundane life. School came and went, homework and projects and WoW and doodling occasionally...
I ended up waking up around 2pm Friday. I checked my email around 4:30 pm, and found out something truly amazing... DigiPen students were getting access to $10 tickets... and Mr. Uematsu himself had agreed to visit DigiPen and give an hour long Q&A session with the students! I hastily purchased my ticket to the concert, and tried to invite a few friends to come along, but no one was available. I was just about to get on my bike for a bus ride downtown when one of my friends called back, and wanted to come along! Luckily, seats were available when we arrived, and we were treated to the concert I will never forget. Everything from Big Band Chocobo to the full FFVI Opera Music was put on to stellar applause, and I got my first glimpse of Nobuo Uematsu himself dressed for the occasion. Words cannot express how much passion, hours, and energy I have immersed into the worlds of Final Fantasy. To hear the music played live by a professional Symphony and Chorus was beyond belief. There was uproarious ovation to each piece, each one better than the last.
With the final chords of Terra's Theme still bouncing around my mind, I purchased the CD and a T-Shirt to commemorate the event afterward. We were going to head back to my place to pick up my FFVI and FFVII Soundtrack CDs and my camera, but the bridge was closed due to boat traffic. Instead, we just went back to my friend's place and crashed for the night. Much Okami was played. (Mental note, Must Draw Amaterasu!)
Today, the Q&A session was scheduled for 2pm. We went back to my place to acquire my goodies, and made it to school just in time to wait. The main auditorium was reserved for alumni and faculty, with students able to watch video feeds in the other two rooms. One was washed out and blurry, and the other was rather quiet, so they eventually let us stand in the main auditorium up against the walls.
I don't remember any specific questions about Mr. Uematsu or the orchestra conductor Mr. Roth, though as usual I only thought of one after it was too late. There were questions about his process, how he comes up with ideas, how he breaks mental blocks. Surprisingly similar to any artistic medium. He explained how his favorite character to compose for was Aeris, and how he loved writing Locke and Celes' themes to be played over each other in tandem to audibly illustrate their romance... it was quite amazing.
At the end, Mr. Roth and Mr. Uematsu were unfortunately unable to meet with individual students, as they had to get back downtown for another concert performance this evening. Since I was standing, I was lucky enough to get Mr. Uematsu's attention in the hall, offer him a sharpie and my FFVI and FFVII CDs, and humbly offer my deepest gratitude in the Japanese that I know. He's probably heard it a thousand times, but the beaming smile upon his face showed me just how much he enjoyed making his music, and seeing how it affects the lives of millions of people around the world. That spark in his eyes was just as inspirational now as it was in 1994 when I first started playing Final Fantasy VI.
I was exceedingly lucky to get my CDs signed today, and I will cherish them for years to come. I sincerely hope that everyone reading this will someday meet their legends, and aspire to follow in their footsteps as I have.

| Summer Plans... |

| | worried | ] | ...are pretty much up in smoke by this point.
I had a significant amount of college funds in the stock market, and apparently their value has plummeted right when I needed it most. I paid my college tuition on my Amex card, only to find out that there were no more funds available to pay off my Amex from my college tuition fund.
I'm not flat broke, but one step closer to it. I still have my normal income of $1400/mo, but since half of that is eaten by rent and a roommate who still hasn't gotten a job, it's going to be incredibly difficult to pay down this debt in any kind of expedient manner.
I've put out a few applications to local businesses to see about a part-time job, so hopefully that will assist in getting things taken care of. The biggest change is that I have to restrain myself from getting Blizzcon tickets, or even going to Anthrocon. I just can't afford anything out of town this summer unless I win the lottery. And I don't like buying tickets. :(
I'm also mulling over the idea of accepting more commissions, but I'm just excrutiatingly difficult to wrangle art out of. I rarely feel like drawing any more even though I want to, and 'forcing' me to draw has been incredibly poor thus far. But... I need money and I need it as fast as possible. We'll see... |
